Presbytery Elder: Helen Rosie August 15th, 2010
Angus Presbytery Meetings take place monthly with the exception of January, July and August, and are usually held in St Margaret’s Church Hall, Forfar. Each church is represented by its minister and presbytery elder. Normally the presbytery elder is elected for a two year period.
The role of the presbytery elder is to attend the various meetings, participate in a two-way exchange between St Vigeans and Angus Presbytery and report back to St Vigeans Kirk Session. Much is discussed at the Presbytery meetings so it is impossible to report on all of it at the Kirk Session meeting. There is, however, a folder of the minutes which is available for the Kirk Session to see.
There are various committees made up of the ministers and elders, and these committees usually meet prior to the Presbytery meeting. Various issues are discussed within the committees and reported on at the Presbytery meeting. Presbyteries are given the opportunity to raise questions or make comments and, following this, recommendation in the form of a deliverance made, to which the individual presbyters have the opportunity to vote. Examples of committees include a Business Committee and in Forum One there are committees for Stewardship, Finance, Fabric, Ministry and Appraisal and Superintendence while Forum Two consists of committees dealing with World Church, and Ecumenical Links, Education, Mission and Development.
I am in the Superintendence Committee and this has given me the opportunity to visit congregations in Carnoustie and Arbroath and hear of the work done in other congregations, look at common difficulties and share experiences.

About the Choir August 15th, 2010
St Vigeans choir is a consistently loyal group of worshippers whose regular church attendance record is outstanding. The young and older members negotiate the steep, bending stairs up to the organ gallery for 10.30 each Sunday to rehearse the hymns and choir items for that morning’s service: an Introit sung when the Bible is brought in; a longer piece during the uptake of the offering and a short verse after the three-fold Amen, allowing church members a quiet interlude before leaving. Four-part harmony (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) is rehearsed for special occasions but the emphasis each week is on all voices singing the “tune.” Since the introduction of the C4 hymn book, the choir have enjoyed learning many of the new hymns, with several being taken up later by the congregation.
Making further use of the beautifully decorated church at a special time of year, the introduction of the Christmas Eve concert of poems, readings and choral items gives extra, but enjoyable, weeks of preparation, letting the audience see the faces of the invisible singers whose voices are usually heard from “up above.”
The choir on several occasions have also prepared a concert in the “Music in St Vigeans” series in June of each year. At the moment, there are 10 ladies and 4 gentlemen in the choir, several combining choir membership with other church duties.
Anyone who can sing in tune would be welcomed into the camaraderie of the group.
Helen M Addison.

About the Piano Club August 14th, 2010
The piano club began as a result of a discussion with Ian Gough, as he knew of a piano club in Glasgow. The idea was to get players together to share music, etc., and also to help others practise performing, as we all get very nervous playing in front of others.
St Vigeans church was chosen as it has the best piano in the area. Fortunately, the Kirk session very kindly gave its permission for this to go ahead.
The club meets on the first Sunday of every month when 2 players perform for around 20 minutes each. This is followed by refreshments. There is no cost for this but the usual practice is a donation of about £2. This covers the cost of tea, coffee, etc., and also helps pay for any guest performers we invite along to play.
Each player chooses their own music and anything goes. We usually choose something we like ourselves and think others will enjoy listening to. Performers must be over 16 but the standard is varied.
I organise who’s playing and when; Gertrud handles the refreshments – she’s very organised and capable. I also collect the donations, record the total, bank it and make out yearly accounts.
I’m not used to playing in front of an audience (except my family). Because of the club I do feel that I am less nervous, as everyone is very supportive and encouraging. Everyone gets plenty of warning and is always asked when they would like to play.
The club stops over the summer months and over Christmas etc. We’re always keen for new performing members but non-players are also very welcome.
